Beef Biryani is a dish that is well-spiced (but not “spicy” in terms of heat). Don’t be put off by the number of spices in this dish – one-half teaspoon is the measurement for each ground spice. The finished dish is well worth the effort!
The pressure cooker is used in the photos accompanying this recipe but the slow cooker works equally as well for Beef Biryani. If using a slow cooker, put all ingredients (except rice) into the slow cooker, set on Low and cook for 6 hours or more.
Melt butter in uncovered pressure cooker (Cook Mode: "brown" for electric pressure cooker -OR- medium heat for stove-top pressure cooker). Add onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
Add the beef, ginger and garlic to the pressure cooker & stir to lightly brown the meat.
Add the remaining ingredients to the pressure cooker, except the rice.
Using an electric pressure cooker, select Pressure Mode - High, set the timer for 30 minutes, & close the lid, following your manufacturer's instructions on how to set your cooker. For stove-top pressure cookers, turn the heat up to high. When the cooker reaches pressure, lower the heat to the minimum needed to maintain pressure. Cook for 30 minutes at high pressure.
When time is up, open the pressure cooker by releasing pressure, again referring to your manufacturer's instructions for your specific pressure cooker.
Simmer uncovered until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 10 minutes. Serve over cooked rice.
For the Rice: Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add salt if desired. Add 1-2 Tablespoons of butter if desired. Add 1 cup rice to the boiling water. Turn the temperature down to "Low" and cover the pot of rice. Cook for 20-25 minutes or until done to your liking. Fluff rice and serve Beef Biryani over the rice.
