Old Time Minnesota Cocoa Bars
Old Time Minnesota Cocoa Bars are quick and simple-to-prepare delightful chocolate nut bar cookies. Since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching I wanted to share another “chocolate” recipe with you!
When you’re craving chocolate but perhaps don’t have any baking chocolate or chocolate chips in the house, this recipe will save you a trip to the grocery store because cocoa is the ingredient needed to provide the chocolate flavor! Many people have cocoa on hand this time of year for making hot chocolate.
Also noteworthy is the time factor – Old Time Minnesota Cocoa Bars only require 10-15 minutes to mix up the batter, spread it into a baking pan and pop it into the oven for 25 – 30 minutes. The most difficult part of this recipe is waiting for the Old Time Minnesota Cocoa Bars to cool when they come out of the oven so you can cut them!
In order to make a smooth batter, sift the cocoa and the flour if there are lumps present in either or both of them.
Allow the butter to soften before beginning to beat it in the mixer. If you’re pressed for time, microwave it on a low setting (10%) for 75 seconds or whatever time your microwave manual indicates to soften it (not melt it).
Before beginning the recipe, chop the nuts so that you won’t have to stop to do it later. The nuts are an optional ingredient – you can leave them out if you wish!
My serving suggestion for Old Time Minnesota Cocoa Bars is to serve them with a scoop of your favorite ice cream, maybe some chocolate syrup and a maraschino cherry! Enjoy!

My Mother was a “chocoholic.” She loved to eat chocolate often! I once made her a counted crossstitch chart of the Four Food Groups to hang in her kitchen. The “Four Food Groups” were: Chocolate Candy, Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Ice Cream! She really loved her chocolate!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
