The Wonton Craze

Cheesy BBQ Beef Wonton Cups are made with wontons, ground beef or turkey, BBQ sauce, onion and grated cheese with a few optional spices added. Over the past few months I’ve noticed wontons being used in so many different ways, filled with either savory or sweet fillings.  I just had to try them myself to taste the merits of this recent trend! I think wontons baked in muffin tins make for an attractive presentation with sweet or savory fillings. I was inspired to make a filling similar to one I had made years ago that was baked in a biscuit-type dough. Here’s the recipe I developed:

Cheesy BBQ Beef Wonton Cups
Yields 12
Wonton Cups filled with ground beef (or turkey), onion, spices, and BBQ sauce topped with Cheddar cheese and baked until crispy.

Ingredients
  1. 1 lb. ground beef (or turkey)
  2. 1/3 cup onion, chopped
  3. 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  4. 1/2 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning
  5. 1 cup prepared BBQ sauce
  6. 24 wonton wrappers
  7. 1 cup Cheddar cheese, grated
Instructions
  1. Spray muffin tins with non-stick spray or grease with butter.
  2. Place 2 wonton wrappers in each well of the muffin tin, overlapping them to ensure the bottom is completely covered.
  3. Brown ground beef and onion in a skillet until beef is completely cooked.
  4. Add seasonings and BBQ sauce; simmer until BBQ sauce is heated.
  5. Spoon BBQ beef mixture into each muffin tin.
  6. Sprinkle with grated Cheddar cheese.
  7. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 10 minutes or until cheese has melted and wontons are browned.
  8. Garnish with sliced green onions if desired.

 The Methodology

To make Cheesy BBQ Beef Wonton Cups, first place 2 wonton wrappers in each muffin tin, being careful to completely cover the bottom of the well.

Next spoon the BBQ Beef mixture into each cup.

Sprinkle grated Cheddar cheese (or whatever cheese you prefer) over tops of the wonton cups.

Bake Cheesy BBQ Beef Wonton Cups at 375°F. for 10 minutes, or until cheese has melted and wontons are browned. Garnish with sliced spring onions if desired.

Parting Comments

I noticed on the Nutrition Label on the package of wonton wrappers that wonton wrappers only contain 20 calories each! Using two wrappers in each muffin tin totals 40 calories. That’s a pretty low calorie base for whatever fillings may be added. I can envision making these wonton cups Italian by mixing some spaghetti or marinara sauce with the ground beef, adding Italian seasoning and topping the wonton cups with Mozzarella and/or Parmesan cheeses. For a Mexican theme, add a small can of mild green chilies to the ground beef, some taco seasoning and some Monterey Jack cheese to the wonton cups.
